With so much to write about this month, it’s difficult to decide where to begin.  So, I’ll start by congratulating the lucky winners of the two Ultimate Avila Beach Getaway prize packages, Kim Heck and Amanda Bailey.   You can see their photos and brief bios by visiting our website, or by taking a look at the press release that appears on another page of this publication.  And if you have yet to view the results of the recently concluded “Avila Speaks” Community Survey, please log onto our website, www.avilabeachfoundation.org and see what your friends and neighbors had to say about life here in Avila Beach.

The next step in the Foundation’s initiative to further engage the community will take place on May 6th at the Avila Community Center.  Our first-ever Avila Beach Town Hall Forum features County Supervisor Adam Hill as keynote speaker and moderator.  He will be joined by representatives from P.G & E., Chevron, and the Port San Luis Harbor District, each of whom will speak about upcoming projects and developments of significance to the local community.  Also on hand will be representatives from several local community and civic groups to provide information and answer questions about their organizations.  For details about this event, please look for the ad/flyer that appears on another page in this publication, or visit our website and click on the announcement.  On top of all the useful information to be shared that evening, those in attendance will be treated to complimentary appetizers and beverages – including a wine tasting table.  There is no cost to attend, but seating is limited to the first 75 people who register.

Moving right along, many of you already know that the Foundation helps subsidize costs to provide free Avila Beach Trolley rides on weekends throughout the year.  Just last month we received a report from South County Area Transit, which operates the Trolley, on rider figures for 2009.  It may come as a surprise that there were a reported 7,221 passengers over the course of the year.  Not so surprising is that the two heaviest rider months were July and August, during which period 2,225 people hopped on board.  Avila Beach is a very popular destination during the summer, and crowded parking makes the Trolley a good choice for those wanting to avoid the hassle.  Give the Trolley a try, and bring along some friends for a good time.  The Foundation is proud to help make this free service available throughout the year.

Last, but surely not least, I am excited to announce the establishment of yet another community project fund in Avila Beach, thanks to the generosity of longtime Avila resident Joan Sargen.  The exact purpose of this fund will be announced shortly, after Joan and I sit down to discuss her special interests and emerging opportunities in the area.  It is Joan’s hope that others in the community will contribute to this new project development fund.  The Foundation will gladly help promote further public interest in doing so.  We now have four special interest funds under Foundation management, the other three being the Terry Eberhardt Community Center Endowment, the “Grandpa” Old Avila Fire Engine Restoration Fund, and the Save Our (Old Avila) Schoolhouse Project Fund.  Donations to any of these funds is fully tax deductible, so please consider joining some of your friends and neighbors by supporting these worthy historic preservation and future vision efforts.

Thank you for reading this column.  The Avila Beach Community Foundation welcomes your input and is happy to answer any questions you may have about supporting our mission to enhance the Avila Beach lifestyle. Call 595-4095, or visit www.avilabeachfoundation.org.
