At the risk of having “News and Views” sound like “Rants and Raves” – what the heck happened to the usual Avila Beach summer to which we are accustomed?!?!?  I have to admit feeling somewhat cheated by Mother Nature this year, which has seen us jump from spring to fall with nary a “tee-shirt-and-shorts-only-evening” to enjoy on the deck.  Oh well, perhaps fall will be bestowed by an extended Indian summer – my fingers are crossed.

Okay, on to the business at hand.  For those of you yet to be approached by our devoted ticket sellers, you better act fast if you want to attend the second annual Avila Beach Albacore Feed, scheduled for Saturday, October 9th.  This fundraising event to support the Avila Beach Community Center and programs funded by the Avila Beach Community Foundation was a first year sellout.   It was so popular, that we added a second seating and take-out only options so more folks can enjoy some terrific albacore and all the fixings – prepared by local Chef Extraordinaire Pete Kelley.  We have kept the prices low - $20 for adults and $10 for youth 12 years and younger.  For details or to order tickets you can call 627-1997, or visit www.avilabeachcc.com for more information.

Next, I am pleased to announce that the Foundation recently elected two members of the community to our Board of Trustees.  Maridel Salisbury – a name familiar to a great many of you – is coming back for her second stint, having been one of the earlier Trustees and past Board President.  She and husband John are longtime Avila residents and owners of the very popular Salisbury Vineyards and Tasting Room.  If you enjoy fine wine and exquisite art, Salisbury is the place to go.  Also elected was a relative newcomer - Julian Varela - an Avila Beach resident whose columns in the Avila Community News and other publications you have probably read.  Julian owns Equilibrium Fitness for Women in San Luis Obispo, and is dedicated to promoting health and wellness for men, women and children alike.  Please join me in welcoming Maridel and Julian, who have pledged to help the Foundation meet its mission to enhance life in the Avila Beach communities.

While I cannot believe the season is already upon us, it is time for the Foundation to launch our annual grant-making process.  We are now accepting proposals from organizations and individuals seeking support for programs or projects that will benefit the people and town of Avila Beach.  There is a formal grant request procedure in place, with details appearing on our website. Information and applications can be found at www.avilabeachfoundation.org.  Fully completed proposals are due by 5:00p.m., October 15th.  Eligible applicants will be invited to make a formal presentation at a meeting on October 26th, and our Trustees will convene on November 9th to select those to be awarded grants for the upcoming year.  For those readers unfamiliar with us, the Foundation is the steward of an endowment established as part of the UNOCAL beach clean-up and settlement more than a decade ago.  Since the year 2000 the Foundation has awarded nearly $2 million towards local projects, programs and facilities now being enjoyed by all who live in or visit our fine community.

That’s about it for now.  As always, the Foundation encourages and welcomes feedback from our neighbors in the area.  I hope you have visited our website, enjoyed our columns in this publication, and participated in some of the social or informational activities we have hosted or co-hosted this past year.  I look forward to seeing you at the October 9th Albacore Feed.  Tickets are going fast, so act soon!
