Where to begin?  The Foundation trustees and staff have been quite busy of late, so there is much to write about in this month’s column.  First of all, I want to thank everyone who was involved with making the recent Avila Albacore Feed such a tremendous success.  Nearly 250 people attended and enjoyed fine food prepared by board members, friends and staff of both the Avila Beach Community Foundation and the Avila Beach Civic Association – under the watchful eye of Pete Kelley, former local restaurant owner and well-known chef.  And much appreciation goes to product donors Alapay Cellars, Salisbury Vineyards, Custom House and Firestone Brewery, whose generosity helped our first joint fundraiser net close to $5,000.  Photos from the event can be seen elsewhere in this publication.

Next I want to introduce something quite new for the Avila Beach area – that being the “Avila Speaks” community survey now underway.  We at the Foundation are very interested in hearing from those of you who live, work and play in our wonderful beach town and valleys.  The feedback and information we collect will help several community groups prepare for the future.  I am well aware that sometimes it takes a little spicing up of things to get people to fill out surveys, so for those of you willing to spend the five minutes required to share your views, we offer a chance to win the “Ultimate Avila Beach Getaway” – which is a two-night mini vacation right here in Avila Beach.  The package includes lodging, golf, pampering, meals and more, thanks to the generosity of our promotional partners Avila Village Inn, Avila Beach Golf Resort, Avila Lighthouse Suites, Custom House, Olde Port Inn, Woodstone Marketplace and Deli, Avila Hot Springs Resort, La Mirage Café at Avila Hot Springs, and more to come.  Just visit www.avilabeachfoundation.org and click on “Avila Speaks” to complete your online survey.  It’s easy to do, and you might just win the exciting mini vacation package.  Use it yourself, or give it away to a relative or friend.  The deadline to complete and submit your survey is December 15, 2009.

Also, you might recall reading in this column last month two announcements – one being the Foundation’s cash contest for the creation of a new logo and tagline for our organization.  This contest is open to professional and amateur marketeers alike, with a grand total of $400 on the line - $200 to the person who comes up with the chosen logo, and $200 for the winner of the chosen tagline.  Remember, the contest entry deadline is November 30, 2009 – so log onto our website to take a look around -  www.avilabeachfoundation.org.   And the other notable announcement last month was our first ever “Matching Contributions” challenge, which matches up to $100 the contribution of the first 50 donors to give $100 or more to the eligible Avila Beach organizations or projects of their choice.  What better way to turn $5,000 of support into $10,000 of good deeds!!!  Checks have already begun to arrive, and the deadline of December 31, 2009 will soon be upon us.  Visit our website for more information about the “Matching Contributions” program.

Other news coming down the pike will be the November announcement of grants awarded for the year 2010 to support local organizations and projects that are beneficial to the Avila Beach community, and some preliminary information about a town hall gathering being planned for the first quarter of 2010.  County Supervisor Adam Hill will be moderating what we hope will be an uplifting opportunity for locals to meet representatives from some of the key community organizations, and provide everyone present a forum to share ideas that can help shape the future of our wonderful beach town and surrounding areas.  Space is limited, so if you wish to be invited please contact us at avilafoundation@gmail.com.

Thank you for reading this column.  I hope you are enjoying free delivery of the Avila Community News to your Avila PO boxes – courtesy of the Avila Beach Community Foundation.
