The “news” is plentiful this month.  First and foremost I am pleased to report that our Foundation trustees met on July 23rd to discuss, among other things, grant making plans for the coming year.  It was not a foregone conclusion that any grants would be made for 2010.  The Avila Beach Community Foundation investment portfolio is down significantly since last year at this time – just as are almost all foundations across the country.  In fact, a great many foundations have chosen to temporarily cease, or curtail, grant making until the economy turns around. However, our board elected to continue its support of local organizations and community projects, at a responsible level. The Foundation is now accepting applications for funding.  The deadline to submit requests is September 15, 2009.  Grant application forms can be downloaded from our website, www.avilabeachfoundation.org.

More news, but of a sad note, is the resignation of Michele Toone, who has been a valuable staff consultant to the Foundation – and my predecessor Boyd Horne – for nearly ten years.  Michele, in assisting Boyd, did much to bring stability and professionalism to the organization.  Working behind the scenes, but always with Avila Beach on her mind, Michele made a great impact.  She will be missed.  We are now in the process of finding a new Office/Project Specialist, and an Avila Beach resident would be ideal.  If you have a background that includes administrative support, computer graphics, meeting organization/note taking, website design/management, event planning – and are available on an average of 6-10 hours per week - call 595-4095 and ask for a job announcement.

By way of “views”, as I sit in my Avila Beach office I can see much going on in the area.  The sun is out, the beaches and merchants are crowded with locals and tourists, many kids are enjoying summer camps at the Community Center and the Marine Institute, and the Jr. Lifeguard program is in full swing.  Life is good in Avila, but those of you who live here already know that.  I was playing golf at the Avila Golf Resort this past Sunday and saw a lineup of cars parked hundreds of yards down Avila Beach Drive.  These are the less fortunate multitudes that come from near and far to enjoy on weekends what we have 365 days a year.  Let us not take Avila for granted, as we all need to do our part to maintain such a wonderful environment.  Avila has changed, and it will continue to do so as time eventually alters everything.  The Avila Beach Community Foundation is here to participate in and support projects that exemplify our past, present and future.  Visit our website, www.avilabeachfoundation.org  to learn how you can get involved.
