October is one of my favorite months because of Halloween. Our neighborhood’s Halloween participation is getting bigger every year. We enjoy the routine of catching up with all our neighbors as their kid’s “Trick or Treat” up and down our street. For some, it’s our yearly opportunity to check in and hear all the latest updates about their children and grandchildren.
The 2025 Avila Beach Community Foundation Grant cycle closed yesterday, and we are very excited to begin reviewing grant applications to be presented to the Board in November. We have several new organizations participating for the first time this year. It is inspiring to read about the impactful work being done in the Avila community by each of our applicants. The Board looks forward to announcing grant recipients for the coming year in late November.
Avila Beach Community Foundation Monthly Spotlight
This month the ABCF spotlights the Surfrider Foundation. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting the world's oceans, waves, and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a group of surfers in Malibu, California, it has grown into a powerful activist network with over 80 chapters and 1 million supporters worldwide. Surfrider focuses on a variety of initiatives, including plastic pollution reduction, water quality improvement, coastal preservation, beach access, and climate change. They achieve their goals through a combination of grassroots activism, community engagement, education, and legal advocacy. Surfrider's mission is to ensure clean water, healthy beaches, and accessible coastlines for all to enjoy. The Avila Beach Community Foundation proudly supports the Surfriders Foundation to fund laboratory supplies for the Blue Water Task Force program.
