By the time your eyes view this column, it will be evident that the Avila News is now being mailed to all Avila Beach area residents, courtesy of the Avila Beach Community Foundation.  We have entered into this progressive partnership with the News because we believe the publication is a wonderful vehicle for keeping the local community aware of things going on in Avila, which contributes to the “Foundation’s” mission to “enhance the community life of Avila Beach.”  We hope you enjoy the convenience of finding the Avila News in your mailbox each month, and any feedback is welcome.

Additionally, the “Foundation” is pleased to announce the establishment of three new donor directed, special project funds.  Each fund – summarized below - is for a specific purpose, and was created to enable others in the community to provide financial support beneficial to the cause.

  • The Avila Beach Community Center Endowment was launched by longtime Civic Association board member, and current President, Terry Eberhardt. The purpose of the endowment is to augment essential general operating funds raised by the Avila Beach Civic Association each year.  The endowment will generate additional funds to ensure that programs and activities will be provided in perpetuity at the Community Center, which is rapidly become a premier gathering spot for locals to enjoy.
  • The Grandpa Restoration Fund has been established to support an ongoing project that realizes high visibility each Friday during the Avila Fish and Farmers Market season. Grandpa, the 1942 Avila fire engine that was rediscovered at the old UNOCAL tank farm, is being restored and preserved by the Cal Fire Avila Valley Station staff to be displayed and used at various community events.
  • The Save our Schoolhouse Fund (SOS) was recently created with initial contributions from longtime Avila Beach residents Anne Brown, and Lynn and Christopher Helenius.  SOS is an effort by local citizens to preserve and establish a local museum and historical society at our Avila School. A San Luis Obispo County mandated report determined the Avila School is historic and belongs on the state historic register. The Avila Beach Community Foundation is currently accepting donations earmarked for this effort. Funds will be used for the museum interior in a completely restored schoolhouse.
Donations to any of the above mentioned special project funds are fully tax deductible.  Checks can be written to the Avila Beach Community Foundation, and should include a notation that earmarks to which fund(s) the donation is directed.  For more information call 595-4095.

Last, but not least, is news of the upcoming Avila Albacore Feed, scheduled for October 10th at the Avila Beach Community Center.  This inaugural event is a joint fundraiser between the Avila Beach Community Foundation and the Avila Beach Civic Association.  Fresh albacore, salad, beans, bread, dessert, soda and coffee are included in the ticket prices of $20 per adult and $10 for children 12 years of age and under.  Tickets go on sale September 1st, and can be purchased at the Community Center.  Seating is limited. For more information call 627-1997.
