In last month’s column I mentioned several projects funded by the Foundation that have had integral and lasting impacts on the community – such as the renovation and staffing of the Avila Community Center, the free weekend trolley, lighting improvement and maintenance on the Avila Promenade, exhibits at the Marine Institute, producing the monthly Avila Community Calendar, providing scholarship for the Avila Beach Jr. Lifeguard program, and much more.
I believe that you will agree with me that Avila Beach and the surrounding Valley are very special places to live, work and play. We enjoy the best weather, beautiful beaches and rolling terrain, and a somewhat isolated environment yet only minutes away from more highly populated areas with ample offerings of commerce, entertainment and employment. It is up to all of us, as a community, to do what we can to preserve and contribute to what is truly an enviable lifestyle.
In the coming months the Avila Beach Community Foundation trustees will begin to shape its future direction. One of our most important tasks is to ensure we initiate efforts that best meet our mission – that being to “accept donations and fund projects for the enhancement and betterment of the Avila Beach community, in perpetuity.” We are presently a small organization of eleven trustees and two very part time staff.
To do more requires more – be it input, time or money. That’s where YOU come in – you who thrive in the Avila Beach lifestyle. Why did you choose to live here? What gets you excited? What will you get behind? Do art projects as an Avila “signature” stir your passion? Is a celebration or preservation of our local heritage and culture something you would support? How about a local library or expansion of the new Community Center? We are limited only by our collective creativity, interest and involvement.
As a community we are empowered to influence our future, and you can be part of that. We would like to hear from you. If you have ideas to express, time to spare, financial resources or expertise to share – please call us at 595-4095, or email us at [email protected] .
