District 3 County Supervisor Adam Hill shared with us his perspectives on the importance of economic vitality at the municipal level. A solid tax base helps support myriad public services, a strong business base ensures the flow of local and tourist dollars, and offers residents places they can patronize without always having to leave Avila. Tom Jones from P.G.&E. informed us just how safe and cheap nuclear energy is in relation to other forms, while at the same time sharing the company’s present challenges to reapply for a new license to operate, and to address possible new regulations for systems cooling processes. Carolyn Moffatt and Steve McGrath of Port San Luis Harbor District previewed plans for the new Harbor Terrace development – an exciting camping facility on the inland side overlooking Avila Beach that will get motor homes off their present ocean side locations, and they provided updates on the Point San Luis Lighthouse, the Bob Jones Trail extension to Hartford Pier, and the Wild Cherry Canyon project that will eventually link Avila with Montana de Oro. Suzanne Parker from Chevron provided some interesting background on the history of oil production on the Central Coast, and offered some insight into progress on the Tank Farm project.
For those of us who organized and facilitated the Forum, we rely heavily upon the feedback received from attendees who took the time to complete the post-event evaluation as a way to determine how well we did, and if this was an exercise worth repeating. On the report card portion of the evaluation, overall we scored 4.35 out of 5.0 – not bad, but definitely room for improvement. Food and beverage received the highest score of 4.7, while the registration process, program moderating and presentations averaged 4.25. More important than this scoring, however, is the narrative portion of the evaluation, from which some interesting comments and ideas emerged. Following is an edited summary of just some of what was submitted by Forum attendees………
General comments included:
