Hello friends and neighbors. Let me begin this month’s column by thanking those – over 200 of you – who attended the 2nd Annual Avila Beach Albacore Feed, co-hosted by the Civic Association and Avila Beach Foundation. What a wonderful evening it was, as the previously cool weather finally turned warm and we basked in the delightful aroma of albacore donated by the Port San Luis Harbor District on the grill loaned to us by Custom House. Head chef Pete Kelley and his crew managed to satisfy everyone’s appetite as we feasted on tasty food and enjoyed some outstanding wines donated by our generous friends at Alapay Cellars, Salisbury Vineyards, Morovino Winery, and Wood Winery. My deepest appreciation to all of you who served on the planning committee, donated goods, sold tickets, and volunteered on the day of the event. I am pleased to say that our collective efforts raised $4,000 to be used for Avila Community Center operations and Avila Foundation grant making. All in all this year’s Albacore Feed was a huge success, and we look forward to next year being event better!
Next, I would like to bring forth an idea that popped up recently. One day after the dazzling fireworks show following a concert at the golf course, I received an email from a downtown Avila Beach resident. She was unaware of and taken by surprise when suddenly at 9:30p.m. the sky exploded with a fury. She wondered “how did I not know that this fireworks show was to take place - did I miss something by way of announcements?” I emailed back to inform her it was part of Sunset Magazine’s grand finale event, which had been publicized for many weeks – though I also stated that word of the pending fireworks show was not so obvious. Then, a couple weeks later, the Foundation received a courtesy email from Port San Luis that the Avila Beach parking lot would be closed several days for repaving.
I began to scratch my chin in thought, wondering if an opportunity had presented itself. Might it be nice if we who reside and work in Avila were able to learn in advance of things to happen in our area that could interrupt our daily lives? Not for the purpose of promoting or criticizing these occurrences, but for the purpose of adjusting our routines accordingly? I would personally find benefit in knowing in advance to ensure my dog is safely indoors before a “big bang” cracks the sky. And knowing in advance when the parking lot will be closed could help any number of us who have plans to head downtown during that period. No doubt the residents in San Luis Bay Estates would benefit by knowing in advance those dates when special events traffic or road maintenance would greatly impede their exit or entrance. So, my friends, what do you think about the idea of there being some sort of community alerts clearinghouse website? While it would take a great deal of outreach and cooperation to get it going, and ongoing efforts to keep it current, I believe such an undertaking has value.
