Welcome to May. It’s always been my favorite month of the year which probably dates back to my teaching days. May always signaled summer was coming and that I had just over a month left until the much-anticipated break. My 6th-grade students were moving on to Junior High, so it often meant they were saying goodbye to a school they called home for over 7 years. There was always a look in their eyes as they were filled with both excitement and a touch of apprehension as they made their transition to the mystery and adventure of Junior High. Celebrations were always bittersweet as we sent them on their way to the next step in their educational journey.

This month we also celebrate Cinco de Mayo which commemorates the Mexican victory over French forces looking to turn Mexico into a monarchy in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Mother's Day, May 12th, was proclaimed a national observance on the 2nd Sunday of May by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Memorial Day, May 27th, is dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the US military. Memorial Day began after the Civil War ended and was originally called Decoration Day. It's a busy month, so let’s talk a little about what is happening in the foundation.

The foundation is spotlighting first-time grant recipient the NatureTrack Foundation. NatureTrack offers an outdoor field trip program to include wheelchair users of all ages. Using Freedom Trax, a manual wheelchair can be quickly transformed into a battery-powered all-terrain vehicle that easily traverses beach sand and trails. NatureTrack helps wheelchair users or those with a physical disability access and explore beaches and trails from San Luis Obispo to Ventura. Wheelchair users can independently enjoy nature alongside family and friends. NatureTrack enables ALL individuals the opportunity to connect with their natural world in a positive, tangible, and meaningful way.

In 2024, the Avila Beach Community Foundation is pleased to award funding to the NatureTrackFoundation to provide universal access for wheelchair users to the outdoors.

The Avila Beach Community Foundation is excited to announce our continued partnership with Chevron Corporation to underwrite our Promenade and Sidewalk Beach Clean-up during the summer season. Chevron’s generous donation of $5,000 will allow the foundation to continue working with PathPoint to administer and manage this community outreach program. PathPoint is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supporting people in living the life they choose. They partner with people who have disabilities, people with mental health diagnoses, and young adults to enable them work opportunities in their local communities.

Until next month, enjoy the beautiful weather and have a wonderful month of May!
