I cannot believe this is happening to me, but I recently spent two hours online viewing various websites that cater to people wanting to visit the Lake Tahoe/Reno areas. I used to travel without the benefit of such high-tech tools at my disposal, but for the life of me I don't remember how I got by. I vaguely recall using some old standby methods - reading the AAA travel books, hoping for reliable "word-of-mouth" recommendations by hotel desk clerks, and picking up as many tourist activity brochures as I could find at my chosen vacation spot once I got there. How archaic!!!
Clearly, we are not in Kansas anymore, Toto. These days I have grudgingly followed the legion of contemporary computer savvy folks who navigate the web to learn all and do all. While I have no desire be fully "computer savvy", I've grasped just enough to appreciate this modern modality. Though not perfect, the internet opens up vistas and opportunities beyond my wildest imagination - which brings me to Avila Beach. One wouldn't think it to be the case, but there are actually quite a few websites devoted to promoting that which takes place in the small populace of Avila Beach. Restaurants, lodging, spas, wine tasting rooms, a golf course, retail merchants, real estate, and more.
Access and information for nearly everything Avila is at our fingertips, which brings me to a lesser known informational opportunity for area residents who want to stay on top of, or become involved in, local issues. Community groups - usually with limited resources - are often among the last to adopt more modern, often costly and time consuming promotional strategies. While almost anyone bold enough can launch a basic and inexpensive website, it does not take long for site visitors to separate the helpful from not so helpful and ill maintained ones. I am pleased to say that here in Avila Beach our community and non-profit groups have some pretty nice websites up and running.
If you want to see the schedule of classes and activities taking place at the Avila Beach Community Center, all you need to do is log onto www.avilabeachcc.com. Many have wondered just what's happening at the Avila Marine Institute, and you can find out by logging onto www.marineinstitute.com. The Avila Business Association, which helps fuel the local economy, maintains a website that can be found at www.avilabusiness.com. To learn more about camping at the beach, or touring the Port San Luis Lighthouse, log onto the Harbor District’s website at www.portsanluis.com. To view a terrific website that will inform you of the many wonderful things to do and places to go in the greater Avila Beach area, visit www.avilabeach.com.
Likewise, I encourage those of you inclined to get involved with matters of local public concern to learn about the Avila Valley Advisory Council by logging onto www.avilavalley.org. And last, but not least, I urge you to become more familiar with the Avila Beach Community Foundation, which has been awarding grants, supporting projects and contributing to the overall welfare of Avila Beach since 1998. We are a non-profit, charitable organization whose mission is to accept donations and fund projects for the betterment of the Avila Beach Community in perpetuity.
