I stopped by the Pelican Point home (in the San Luis Bay Estates) of my friend, Cindy Borchard, a couple of weeks ago as she was preparing for her annual trip to Mazatlan. Cindy invited me in for a glass of iced tea and poured some concoction of juices and soda for herself. There was a purpose to my visit—that being to entice Cindy to become involved with the Avila Beach Community Foundation.
I met Cindy about 18 years ago while I was toiling as Executive Director of the SLO County Crisis and Information HOTLINE, and she was in a similar capacity for the Family Services Center. I immediately saw in Cindy someone of passion, compassion and conviction. Someone you would surely want to have as a friend. She is a people magnet who seemingly knows EVERYONE, and whom seemingly is loved by EVERYONE. Cindy’s family roots in SLO County run deep, so I do not doubt this observation.
After she retired several years ago, I watched as Cindy involved herself in numerous good causes as a volunteer. I bided my time, hoping someday I could bring Cindy into the fold of whatever organization or cause I was involved in at the moment. My yearning was really tested when Cindy moved into the same neighborhood as me, here in Pelican Point, a handful of years ago. She was always on her way to some other organization’s meeting or fundraising event. But finally, after all these years, I saw an opening. Cindy was taking a year off from her community work to attend to her personal well being – a break she surely deserved after fighting so many good fights for so many years.
“Well that year is up, Cindy, and I want you on my team”, I told her after my first gulp of iced tea. We talked for a while about my new job as the Executive Director of the Avila Beach Community Foundation, and I shared my vision for its future. “Cindy”, I said, “we need to help the residents of greater Avila Beach understand the Foundation’s purpose and convince them to support our work.” Cindy asked, “who wouldn’t want to help preserve Avila Beach for their children and grandchildren?”
Sorry to steal your words, Cindy, but I know you will forgive me. So to all you wonderful people who live in and enjoy our beautiful Avila Beach community, I invite you to help us Preserve Avila Beach for our children and grandchildren.
